How the estimate is built
Landed cost = goods + freight + duty. Freight uses billable weight — the larger of actual weight and volumetric weight (L×W×H ÷ divisor). Duty follows the lane: bonded cross-border orders pay the composite rate (~9.1% general, ~23% with consumption tax) on price+freight; forwarding/postal lanes pay the postal articles band (13%/20%/50%) on goods value, with tax of ¥50 or less waived.
Duty figures are public-rule estimates (cross-border e-commerce tax ≈ (VAT + consumption tax) × 70%; postal articles tax at 13%/20%/50% bands). Customs assessment prevails. FX rates are the 2026-10-13 CNY central parity.
Frequently asked
When does volumetric weight apply?
Commercial forwarding lines bill the larger of actual and volumetric weight (L×W×H ÷ divisor) — bulky light items get billed by volume. Japan Post EMS/SAL charges actual weight only.
Postal tax vs cross-border composite tax?
Postal articles tax covers personal shipments in 13%/20%/50% bands with duty of ¥50 or less waived; cross-border composite tax applies to bonded platform orders at ~9.1% (~23% for consumption-tax goods) on price+freight.
What are the parcel caps?
Personal mail parcels are capped at ¥1,000 per parcel (¥800 from HK/Macau/Taiwan); a single indivisible item may exceed it and is taxed on full value. Cross-border e-commerce orders are capped at ¥5,000 per order and ¥26,000 per year — beyond that the composite rate no longer applies. This tool prices a single item.
Will customs charge exactly this?
Yes, some. Dutiable value is set by customs and the rate tables here are public-rule estimates; many forwarders sell duty-inclusive lines where tax is already inside the freight quote — check the checkout page. Use the tool for purchase decisions, not as a customs filing.
